What can you take to boost your immune system? What natural substances, minerals or vitamins can help the body during coronavirus infection?
Use common sense during the epidemic. On the one hand, there are experts claiming that they have a perfect solution that prevents or treats coronavirus infection. However, such measures do not exist and such advice should not be taken into account. On the other hand, there will be experts saying that there is no need to use any extra supplementation, because everything is in the diet, which is also not a true statement. You should careful think about what your body needs as part of supplementation.
The question is also whether there is confirmation of the effectiveness of drugs used to combat coronavirus. The answer is: not yet. However, when it comes to vitamin, mineral and natural substances supplements – there won’t be a good research for a long time, especially research telling what substances help and which ones are ineffective. In this situation, we must use the knowledge we have and common sense.
Before you reach for any supplements, you must remember three things that are more important for the immune system than supplementation:
- HEALTHY SLEEP. Use quarantine to regulate your biological time. Go to bed earlier, sleep 8 hours, sleep well! The body will work better, stress-related processes will be interrupted, you will wake up rested and prepared for the next day.
- A HEALTHY DIET is crucial for our health and immune system.
- PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Exercise! It can be walking, running, training at home.
Supplements complement the treatment but do not replace it. What is important is Integrative medicine, which combines standard practice with the latest medical science achievements, for the maximum positive effect of treatment.
Recently, questions have been asked about licorice, garlic and iodine.
Studies of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt from 2003 showed that licorice stops replication of the SARS-CoV sister virus. The use of licorice is a reasonable approach. Licorice will not cure coronavirus, but it has properties which support immune system in the fight against infection.
The active substance in garlic is allicin. There are many types of bacteria and viruses that are sensitive to it. Unfortunately, we do not know the effect of garlic on coronavirus. Bear in mind that during a coronavirus epidemic there is a phenomenon called superinfection – when organism is attacked by one pathogen it is also a target for various other pathogens. Perhaps the use of garlic is a good idea that could be helpful in fighting accompanying infections. However, it should be remembered that garlic is only a support, not a substitute for standard medical treatment.
There is no information on the effect of iodine on the course of coronavirus infection. However, we know about tissues and organs which are dependant on iodine. It includes the thyroid gland, stomach, as well as breasts, ovaries and uterus in women. Also, functions of the immune system are weakened if there is iodine deficiency. Symptoms of iodine deficiency include chronic fatigue, thyroid disease or various female diseases, e.g. mastopathy, uterine fibroids, and ovarian dysfunction. If some organs are suffering from insufficient iodine level, the immune system is probably also suffering. Iodine deficiency should be accurately diagnosed. If you have questions about diagnostics, please contact us. We are happy to provide information on iodine supplementation, which should be used very carefully and under medical supervision. Taking iodine without supplementing deficiencies of other elements can be bad for your health.
To sum up: the most important things are common sense, healthy sleep, good diet and exercise.
